Lumbee tribal members agree to limit territory

MONDAY, MARCH 10, 2003

Members of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina voted on Saturday to limit the tribe's territory.

The current constitution refers to the state as the tribe's area. It will be amended to cover just three counties.

The limitation is seen by tribal members are helping to making the case for federal recognition. Members of Congress are backing a bill to recognize the tribe.
