Republicans in Wisconsin were unable to muster enough votes to override Governor Jim Doyle's veto of their gaming oversight bill.

Doyle has negotiated new compacts with two tribes that authorize expanded gaming in exchange for a higher share of revenues. Republicans immediately passed a bill stripping him of the power to make any more deals but he vetoed it.

The debate was accompanied by public release of tribal gaming revenues by Republican Assembly Speaker John Gard. Tribes said his move may have violated their compacts with the state.
