Wis. tribe's vote on land deal affirmed by court

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2003 A Wisconsin state appeals court on Tuesday upheld a tribal referendum on a land deal that was challenged by a non-Indian property owner. The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa entered into negotiations to buy Strawberry Island for $1.6 million from the island's owner, Walter Mills. But after tribal members voted to reject the deal and and further talks failed, and Mills went to court to enforce the purchase. The court said it would not overrule the decision of a sovereign tribe. Get the Story:
