Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. and Vice President Frank Dayish Jr. were "flat out wrong" to hire their wives to work for the tribe, The Farmington Daily Times says in an editorial today.

The paper says the new leaders should have consulted the tribal council before hiring their wives for posts that pay $50,000 a year. The women are said to be cultural ambassadors.

"If Shirley and Dayish are sincere in their efforts, then they need to conduct a search across the Navajo Nation and among other tribes for the most qualified people to do the job," the paper says. "Then Vikki Shirley and Virginia Dayish can proudly continue in their roles as ambassadors of the Navajo people to the world."
