Appeals court nominee stirs Hispanic groups

The debate over one of President Bush's appeals court nominees has stirred passions among Hispanic groups, who are divided in their support for Miguel Estrada.

Estrada is a Honduran native who emigrated to the United States. Critics say he was appointed to placate Hispanic groups, some of whom say he is Hispanic in name only.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus, all Democrats, opposes his nomination as does the Mexican American Defense and Educational Fund. The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) voted to support it while the National Council of La Raza has stayed neutral.
