Editorial: Don't 'snatch' tribal economies

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2003 Expanding gaming in Washington isn't fair to Indian Country, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says in an editorial today. Non-Indian forces want to authorize slot machines at non-tribal gaming facilities. But the paper says this runs counter to federal policy towards tribes. "It would be inconsistent and unfair for the state to snatch back some of the tribal members' economic benefits by allowing wide open competition with the tribes' casinos," the paper says.
