Navajo Nation hit hard by drought

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2003

Ranchers and farmers on the Navajo Nation have been hit hard by a drought that has caused the death of livestock and forced them to sell their animals.

The tribe is hoping to get some emergency assistance from the federal government. Sheep, goats, cattle and horses are in dire shape, according to a report prepared by the tribe.

The tribe arranged a series of auctions for ranchers and farmers. Many have sold for less than market value.
