Inupiat villages to celebrate three-day feast

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2003 Inupiaq villages on Alaska's northern coast are getting together today for Kivgiq, a midwinter celebration of dancing, storytelling, games and feasting. Kivgiq began when Eagle Mother's son taught the Inupiaq how to build a large gathering house, make drums, and create songs and dances. Long a tradition in the villages, it was revived in the late 1980s. About 700 dancers from Alaska, Canada and possibly Canada are expected for the three-day feast. Get the Story:
