Ariz. city's relations with Navajos are strained

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2003 A business owner in Page, Arizona, is making national headlines for telling his Navajo employees not to speak Navajo on the job. But Navajos and city officials cite numerous examples of different treatment of Navajos. According to The Arizona Republic, the city has no Navajos on its police force, and turned down one tribal member with extensive law enforcement experience. Navajos say the transportation department told them not to speak their language. Mayor Dean Slavens says he is trying to improve relations.
