THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2003 The General Accounting Office (GAO), the investigative arm of Congress, released a report last week outlining performance initiatives at the Department of Interior. The GAO found that Secretary of Interior Gale Norton has taken actions to address long-standing problems identified two years ago. But the assessment says significant challenges remain in trust fund management and cited new areas of concern, including Bureau of Indian Affairs' school construction and federal recognition.
