Seminole Nation in court to keep casino open

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2003

The Seminole Nation is in federal court today to prevent federal prosecutors from shutting down its casinos.

The U.S. Attorney's office is seeking closure, alleging the tribe is operating Class III games in violation of state and federal law. But the tribe in a statement said the machines in question have already been removed.

"The question remains as to why the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) appears to be trying to single out the Seminole Nation, particularly since the revenues are not in the double digits as other gaming operations are nor are we located near metropolitan areas upon which to draw major business," the statement said.
