Appeals court considers Cayuga land claim
TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, 2003 The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals will hear an appeal of the Cayuga Nation land claim. The claim involves 64,000 acres of land that the tribe says was illegally transferred out of its control. A federal judge agreed and awarded $247.9 million in damages. The tribe is appealing because it contends the amount is too low. The Department of Justice is supporting the tribe. The state of New York, two counties and private landowners are challenging the entire basis of the claim. Get the Story:
