Leaders in the Four Corners area of New Mexico are "in denial" about gangs that operate in the area, including the Navajo Nation, The Farmington Daily-Times says in an editorial.

According to the paper, there are eight gangs on the reservation in addition to nine others in the region. But some parents, law enforcement, school officials and politicians refuse to acknowledge the problem, the paper says.

"The proliferation of gangs is in direct correlation to the job we are doing as parents, educators, leaders and citizens," the paper writes. "That is why we deny they exist in our community because to admit that gangs are thriving here would be to admit that we have been doing a poor job as parents, educators, leaders and citizens."
