Members of the Flathead Nation of Montana on Saturday overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to eliminate a blood quantum requirement for tribal enrollment.

According to news accounts, the vote was 1,562 to 368 against opening up the rolls to those with one-fourth or less blood quantum. Opponents said the membership would double from 7,000 to 14,000 but supporters said their descendants have been unfairly excluded.
