In Catskills neighbors fear casino traffic

TUESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2003 Officials in Orange County in New York are fearful of the traffic tribal casinos will bring to the long-dormant Catskills. The casinos aren't coming to Orange County though. They are headed to neighboring Sullivan County, which has welcomed jobs and money they will bring. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, partnered with Park Place Entertainment, is the closest to opening a casino. Orange County officials say the plan doesn't address their traffic concerns. New York law authorizes up to two more casinos in the Catskills. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has to agree to take land-into-trust for the tribes before development proceeds. Get the Story:
