In budget crisis state turning to tribes

FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 2003 Tribal leaders in California are reacting cautiously to Governor Gray Davis' proposal to expand Indian gaming in order to boost the state's coffers. Davis said he wants an extra $1.5 billion a year from the tribes. But he said he wouldn't allow gaming to spread to urban areas. The state is in a budget crunch and Davis has assigned a team to renegotiate existing compacts in order to get more money from the tribes. Get the Story:
