Senate resolves dispute over committees

THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 2003

The Senate on Wednesday approved an organizing resolution that gives the Republicans a one-seat majority on legislative committees and control over 60 percent of funding.

The agreement means junior Democrats will lose their seat on most committees. This won't affect the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, due to the recent passing of Sen. Paul Wellstone, Democrat of Minnesota. Maria Cantwell of Washington is the least senior Democrat on the panel.
