Flathead tribal members consider blood quantum

Members of the Flathead Nation of Montana are voting this Saturday on a change to their tribal enrollment policy.

Supporters of the vote say it will prevent the loss of trust land. They estimate that the enrollment will double from 7,000 to 14,000 if the change is approved.

Opponents say the tribe will lose its cultural identity because there will no longer be a blood-quantum requirement. Currently, enrollment is limited to those of one-fourth degree but prior to 1960, those born on the reservation to tribal members were enrolled regardless of blood quantum.
