The recent pardon of American Indian Movement activist Russell Means has helped heal race relations in South Dakota, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader says in an editorial today.

Means pleaded guilty to a felony for obstruction of justice. In 1975, he refused to rise in court for a judge, an incident that led to a brawl with police.

The law under which Means was convicted has since been taken off the books. Former Gov. Bill Janklow, who is now a member of Congress, pardoned Means in one of his last official acts earlier this month.
