Martin is acting assistant secretary

Photo of Aurene Martin Aurene Martin has been named acting head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton announced on Monday.

"I'm deeply honored to accept Secretary Norton's designation," Martin said in a statement, "and I am confident that our efforts to improve the BIA will result in improved services to the trust beneficiaries and the federally recognized tribes."

After a stint as a Senate aide, Martin joined the Bush administration in October 2001. She first served as counselor to Neal McCaleb, who just retired.

Martin is currently the subject of a court investigation into e-mail practices at the BIA. She was called in for questioning before special master Alan Balaran last month.

Martin will serve as acting Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs until a replacement can be confirmed.
