TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2003

Senator Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota), one of the leading Congressional critics of the Bush administration's trust reform efforts, does not plan to seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004.

In a statement, Daschle said he can best serve his state and "working families" throughout America by staying right where he is. "After careful reflection, I've concluded that at this moment in our history, with so many important decisions to be made about our nation's future, my passion lies here in the Senate," he said.

Speculation about a run was high in recent days with some news accounts going so far as to say he will announce his bid.

Daschle and Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) have made an effort to reach out to Indian Country, especially the nine reservations in South Dakota. The initiative helped Johnson win re-election by a narrow margin in November 2002.
