Rival Oneida group denied status in land claim suit

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2003 The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals last week refused to allow the Marble Hill Oneidas of New York to join the Oneida land claim suit. In a unanimous, unpublished opinion, a three-judge panel said the Marble Hill group was adequately represented by the New York Oneida Nation. The court also said the group failed to show that it is a separate tribe. The Oneida claim involves 64,000 acres of land illegally transferred to the state of New York. The plaintiffs are the Oneida of New York, the Oneida of Wisconsin and the Oneida of Canada. The defendants are the state of New York and two counties. The decision in Marble Hill Oneida Indians v.
