Cherokee tribe to 'audit' enrollment

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2002 The Eastern Band of Cherokees of North Carolina are conducting an audit of their tribal rolls, The Waynesville Smoky Mountain News reports. Tribal members voted 1,089 to 808 on December 3 in support of the audit. Supporters say they want to make sure everyone has been properly enrolled. Detractors say it it's too late to change the past. Last year, chairman Leon Jones vetoed a council resolution in support of the audit. Get the Story:
