Former Miss Navajo Nation Radmilla A. Cody gives an exclusive interview to The Navajo Times about the 21-month federal prison sentence she has been ordered to serve for her role in an international drug ring.

Cody said she was in an abusive relationship that led to her involvement in drug smuggling. She said Darrell Dwight Bellamy threatened and beat her.

"There were times I went out there (on stage) with a black eye and I lied to the people, 'I was in a car accident,'" The Times reports.

Cody pleaded guilty to one count of misprision of a felony. She admitted that she knew drugs were being distributed but didn't report it to authorities.

Cody disclosed her sentence last week in a letter to The Navajo Times. Indianz.Com and The Gallup Independent published details of her crimes.

Cody is to report to federal authorities on January 6, 2003. She plans to keep making appearances until then, The Times reports.
