Tribes asked to share casino profits

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2002

A Republican lawmaker in Iowa is asking tribes who operate casinos in the state to share their revenues.

Several tribal casino licenses are up for renewal and the state might seek some sort of deal to make up for its budget woes. But since the tribes do not have a monopoly on gaming, it could be a tough sell.

The Winnebago Tribe, the Omaha Tribe and the Meskwaki Tribe operate casinos in Iowa. The Winnebago and Omaha tribes are based in Nebraska, where Class III gaming is not allowed, and have trust land in Iowa.
