Kevin Gover, former assistant secretary for Indian affairs at the Department of Interior, is leaving his Washington, D.C., law firm to teach at Arizona State University next year, The Arizona Republic reports.

"It's a very significant appointment," Rodney Lewis, general counsel for the Gila River Indian Community, told the paper. "He is a top ranking advocate for Indian tribes and brings a great deal of expertise."

Gover joined the firm of Steptoe & Johnson in January 2001 and leaves after almost two years on the job. His former deputy commissioner at the BIA, Hilda Manuel, also left the firm.
