BIA jail nicknamed 'Little Alcatraz'

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2002 Bureau of Indian Affairs jails are notoriously overcrowded, underfunded and understaffed. But the facility on the Crow Reservation of Montana, inmates say. The inmates praise the food, the clean surroundings and the work schedule. One "trusty" -- an inmate with special privileges -- nicknamed the place "Little Alcatraz," The Billings Gazette reports. The jail did see an increase in inmates during the recent Crow Fair. BIA police chief Darren Cruzan said the population was 10 to 12 times its normal capacity. Get the Story:
