TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2002

The Canadian government has proposed legislation to allow First Nations to collect property taxes.

The First Nations Fiscal and Statistical Management Act would set up a finance Authority to help First Nations collect taxes and issue bonds to pay for infrastructure. The Indian Affairs Minister Robert Nault said the bill will put Native governments on the same level as others.

Some Native leaders support the proposal. The Indian Taxation Advisory Board says it will help Native bands become part of the economy.

The bill was tabled in the House yesterday.
