GOPs leading charge against tribes

MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2002

Republican lawmakers in Connecticut are holding a series of hearings as part of their plan to halt the development of new tribal casinos.

The target is the so-called "Las Vegas Nights" law. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation used the law to bring Class III, or casino-style, gaming to the state.

Repealing the law won't affect the state's existing two tribal casinos. But lawmakers hope to prevent the Eastern Pequot Tribe, which recently gained federal recognition, and other tribes from future development.
