WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2002

The Muckleshoot Tribe of Washington has gained a reputation in and out of Indian Country as shrewd business dealers.

It wasn't always that way. Resigned to poverty and obscurity, tribal members depended heavily on government programs.

Now, the tribe is able to provide housing for elders, assistance for its own members and is the second largest employer in the region behind air industry giant Boeing. The tribe's casino profits have given the economy a much needed boost.
