Water talks call on non-Indians to change

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2002

The Santa Fe New Mexican has obtained documents that it says are proposals to settle a long-running water right suit affecting tribes and non-Indians in northern New Mexico.

The proposal would call on non-Indians to give up private domestic wells. In exchange, a regional water system would be developed, to be funded by the federal government.

The Pueblos of Pojoaque, Nambe Tesuque and San Ildefonso are affected by the case. More than 2,000 individual claims are involved.

Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) has encouraged and overseen talks. He would be likely to introduce a bill that implements the proposals described by The New Mexican.
