The Canadian government is challenging a ruling that exempts thousands of Aboriginals from taxes.

A federal court justice in March exempted forty bands in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories from taxes. He said Treaty 8 should be read in a light favorable to the bands.

The ruling was subsequently stayed while an appeal was lodged.
