Native village survives 7.9 earthquake

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2002

One of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history struck Alaska Native villages last week.

There were a few injuries but no fatalities. One of those hurt was Cherry Nicolai, an 87-year-old elder from Mentasta Lake, who broke an arm.

The earthquake registered 7.9 on the Richter scale.
