Editorial: Bring back fake Indians

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2002 The Chicago Tribune in an editorial mourns the passing of the local YMCA's Y Indian Guides and Princesses program. The paper says the program has helped thousands of children learn about "good values." "Thanks to the Y Indian Guides and Princesses program, children of thousands of those parents instead have grown up with a deeper appreciation for Native American values and traditions," the paper writes. But the actions of a "relatively small number of activists from the American Indian Movement and other organizations that claim to own Indian culture," have now made the "imperiled culture" easier to ignore, the paper says.
