School gets Yup'ik language grant

The Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks has been awarded a $1 million grant to develop Yup'ik language teaching programs.

The grant is from the U.S. Department of Education Alaska Native Education Program. The money will be used to develop a certificate in Yup'ik proficiency and another in Yup'ik-language education. The program will affect 10 students, 12 teacher aides and five undergraduate and graduate fellowships.
