FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2002

A dispute over a proposed casino in California has shelved an omnibus parks bill, The Washington Post reports.

The Post does not explain why provisions preventing the Ewiiaapyaap Tribe from starting a casino within three years were to be placed in the package. But it does quote Marnie Funk, spokesperson for the Republicans on the House Resources Committee, as saying "it's a shame" that all sorts of parks projects have been delayed.

The Ewiiaapyaap Tribe wants to open a casino on land currently housing an Indian health center. The other tribes that are part of the Kumeyaay Nation have gotten involved, with the Viejas Band opposing the Ewiiaapyaap project.
