Changes to Maine settlement law sought

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2002 The Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act is under review by a state commission. The law settled the land claims of several tribes in the state in exchange for federal recognition. But critics say the court's interpretation of tribal governments as "municipalities" goes against Congressional intent. The distinction was drawn in a case involving the Penobscot Nation. The courts said the tribe is subject to a state freedom of information act when it acts as a municipality. Get the Story:
