Tribes gave more of their money to Republican interests than previous election cycles, Gannett News Service reports.

Citing Federal Election Commission data as of October 22, Gannett said 55 percent of tribal donations went to the GOP. This was up from the 21 percent tribes gave to Republicans in 2000, which included the presidential election.

"I don't think it's a great, great mystery," said John Guevremont, director of governmental affairs for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut. "Our efforts are with the party in power.

Based on figures from the Center for Responsive Politics, tribes have contributed $1.3 million so far in 2002.
