Indian voters will determine which party controls the Senate, according to Frank LaMere, a National Democratic Committee official.

LaMere, a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, has urged Native Americans in six states to go to the polls, The Lincoln Journal Star reports. "The most impoverished, the most ignored, the most disenfranchised of all of the people in this country will determine who controls the U.S. Senate in this election cycle," he told the paper. "That's how important the American Indian vote is in 2002."

Indian voters have the potential to sway close races in states like New Mexico, Montana, Oklahoma and South Dakota.
