MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2002

The Alaska Native Language Center was founded by the state Legislature in 1972 to document and cultivate Alaska's 20 Native language.

All of them are threatened, according to the center, including Deg Xinag, an Athabaskan language. An estimated 15 elders still speak the language.

Some of them are participating in a program to revive the language. The elders teach students via conference calling and e-mail.
