Tribes stuff Hayworth's coffers

The majority of money in a campaign fund created by Representative J.D. Hayworth (R-Arizona) comes from tribes or tribal lobbyists, a review by The Arizona Republic has found.

Tribes contributed $225,000 to the Hayworth's TEAM-PAC (Together Everyone Achieves More). This was 60 percent of the fund's $395,000, the paper reported.

The money was funneled to other Republicans, including one who said he doesn't accept money from tribes. Arizona congressional candidate Trent Franks was unaware of the source of his TEAM-PAC funds, a spokesperson said.

Hayworth sits on the House Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over Indian issues. He is co-chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus and is visible on a number of Indian issues.

He helped defeat amendments to a budget bill that would have created a commission to study Indian gaming. Also defeated were provisions affecting an historical accounting of Indian funds.

Hayworth, however, criticized a federal judge for holding Secretary of Interior Gale Norton in contempt of court for failing to account for the funds.
