A proposal to raise student fees at Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas originated with students, The Lawrence Journal-World reports.

But not all are behind the change. "It's a real split," Senate President Casey Douma told the paper. "Those who support it say it's a way to help out; those who oppose it say it's a matter of principle. To them, raising fees sends a message that it's OK for the federal government to underfund Haskell because we, the students, will make up the difference."

The current fee is $150 each semester. The board of regents has agreed to consider an increase.
