Health status of Indian Country lamented

The Nebraska Minority Health Conference featured a keynote address by an Indian health leader.

Carole Anne Heart is the the executive director of the Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairman's Health Board. The organization serves 18 Great Plains and Midwest tribes.

Citing high rates of diabetes, suicide, infant mortality and other disease and conditions, heart said the federal government has failed to live up to its mandate to provide health care to Native Americans.

The conference was held October 15-16.
