The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a case testing the reach of state sovereignty.

A man in Nevada brought suit in Nevada court against the state of California. He accused California tax collectors of harassing him for unpaid taxes.

The Nevada Supreme Court authorized the lawsuit. The state of California's appeal was accepted yesterday.

The case bears resemblance to state claims of sovereign immunity in tribal courts. The Supreme Court in Nevada v. Hicks said the heavy presumption against tribal authority over non-Indians barred a suit against Nevada game officials.

The Nevada-California case is California Franchise Tax Board v. Hyatt, No. 02-42.
