The Samish Nation of Washington has sued the Department of Interior for the years it was refused federal recognition.

Due to a clerical error in 1969, the tribe was dropped off the list of recognized tribal governments. Status wasn't restored until a federal judge stepped in and ruled for the Samish in May 1996.

In the meantime, the tribe was denied federal funds and other benefits. The lawsuit seeks to recover the amount, which has yet to be calculated.

The tribe has a separate lawsuit seeking to regain treaty rights lost as a result of the original error.
