WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2002 The Nivkhs Tribe lives on Sakhalin Island in Russia's Far East. Its way of life is being encroached by outsiders. The tribe numbers around 4,700 out of the island's 600,000. Language use is fading, according to The Moscow Times. The tribe's subsistence lifestyle has been changed due to off-shore drilling.
