WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2002

The Supreme Court on December 2 will hear oral arguments in two breach of trust cases.

One affects the White Mountain Apache Tribe of Arizona. It wants the Department of Interior to repair crumbling school and other buildings on an historic fort on the reservation.

A federal appeals court sided with the tribe and found the government breached its trust to maintain the buildlings. Repairs could cost as much as $14 million.

The same court sided with the Navajo Nation on a $600 million case involving a royalty contract.
