Congress approves Iraq war resolution

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2002 Both chambers of Congress voted on a resolution to grant President Bush the authority to use force against Iraq. The House vote of 296 to 133 came yesterday afternoon. The Senate voted 77 to 23 early this morning. In the Senate, all but one Republican, Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, voted for the resolution. The resolution reads in part: "The President is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate in order to: (1) defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and (2) enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq."
