Census ordered to release adjusted data

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2002

A federal appeals court on Tuesday ordered the Census Bureau to release adjusted data for every jurisdiction in the country.

In a unanimous decision, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a federal judge's order and said the information was public. The agency claimed the data was "predecisional."

Adjusted data can benefit areas that are undercounted, including those with a high Indian population. At least 150,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives were missed by the recent 2000 Census.
