BIA rearranging deck chairs on Titanic

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2002

An opponent of several Connecticut tribes calls Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb's recognition reform plan a bit like "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic."

Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal opposes the two Pequot tribes, the Golden Hill Paugussett Tribe and the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation. He says the tribes, which are state recognized, don't deserve federal status.

McCaleb wants to speed up the decision process and make it more clear.
